As part of my collaboration with Edwards Lifesciences, I developed an augmented reality (AR) operating room to provide a more naturalistic testing environment for the evaluation of medical devices. By combining the capabilities of the Microsoft HoloLens and the Unity game engine, I was able to create an accurate representation of an operating room for a fraction of the price! This operating room was created with a user-centered design approach, where the expertise of surgeons, nursing specialists, and other healthcare stakeholders combined with human factors engineering methods were used to design a space to facilitate more precise medical device usability research.
