One of the biggest problems facing farmers today is the lack of consolidated digital resources aimed at maximizing successful agricultural and business endeavors. Farmers have been increasingly embracing technology and having access to the right information at the right time may make or break both new and established farmers. The redesign of the Farmers.gov website is a prototype aimed at providing farmers of all skill levels information that they need to be successful in today's market.
Some key features of the prototype are an easy-access log-in/sign-up page where users are able to set up a personal profile to have custom, location-based content delivered to their dashboard (weather, commodity prices, community access, etc.). Information about grants, loans, and other financial services are now more prominently displayed on the main page of the website, allowing farmers educate themselves about what forms of assistance are available to them. Environmental conservation programs and services are also featured to promote and maintain sustainable farming practices.
The changes proposed by this prototype were motivated by task analyses and user testing of both the current Farmers.gov website and prototype. Analyses on the current website found that users thought that it was very difficult to navigate, verbose, and lacked organization. From the information we gathered, a wire frame of the prototype was created and then tested to complete the resdesign of the Farmers.gov website.
